Why change oil?
As your engine runs, it uses the oil to lubricate its moving parts and remove excess heat from the engine block. Oil is subject to extremely high temperatures, splashing, turbulence, and thermal shocks (oil goes from high operating temperatures while the engine is running, to cooling down when the engine is shut off).
Another consideration is that most times we do not let the cold engine warm up before we take off.
Due to the above conditions and cycles, certain chemical changes take place and the oil begins to break down and even turn acidic. It also loses its viscosity which is very important for good lubrication between the engines moving parts. Lower viscosity means higher wear on the engines moving parts. Changing the oil brings back the proper viscosity recommended for your engine and the climate it will be operating in. For example: 5W30, 10W30, 20W40 and so on. An oil recommended for cold climate could seize the engine if used by vehicle owners in a warm climate.
The oil also removes particular matter from the engine. If left in the engine too long it will eventually become thick with grime and burnt particles called sludge.
Oil change intervals are set so that you replace the oil when it is beginning to fail, not after it has failed.
